From APTECH to UMS: The Evolution of a Vision for Yemen’s Future

Sana’a, Yemen – 2004

What began as a groundbreaking partnership in IT education between Al Jabal Group and global technology training leader APTECH has evolved into one of Yemen’s most inspiring educational success stories. In 2004, the Aptech Computer Education Center — launched just two years earlier — transformed into what is now known as the University of Modern Sciences (UMS).

At the heart of this transformation was the unwavering vision of Khalil Ghaleb Ali Al Jabal, Chairman of Al Jabal Group, who recognized that Yemen’s youth needed more than technical skills — they needed access to comprehensive higher education grounded in quality, relevance, and global competitiveness.

It was never just about IT training,” said Khalil Ghaleb Ali Al Jabal. “It was always about empowering a generation — equipping them with the education, tools, and confidence to rebuild and lead Yemen.

UMS was born out of the strong educational foundation laid by APTECH’s global curriculum and Al Jabal Infotech’s investment in training infrastructure. Building on this, the institution expanded to offer:

  • Accredited bachelor’s degree programs in IT, Business, Health Sciences, and Engineering
  • Modern learning facilities including computer labs, libraries, and smart classrooms
  • Partnerships with local and international education bodies
  • Scholarships and training opportunities for underserved communities

This transformation positioned University of Modern Sciences as one of Yemen’s first private universities focused on modern, practical, and market-driven education — a reflection of Khalil Ghaleb Ali Al Jabal’s long-term commitment to nation-building through education.

Today, UMS continues to thrive as a center of academic excellence and innovation, with thousands of graduates contributing to Yemen’s public and private sectors. It stands as a legacy project — a direct result of visionary leadership, global collaboration, and the belief that education is the most powerful tool for change.
